Choosing a Calgary painting company is easier when you know what to check before work starts. A friendly conversation and a few finished photos are a useful start, but they do not tell you everything about preparation, who will be in your home, or what is included.
Use these questions to compare painters on the work they are proposing, not just the promises in an advertisement.
Look for Experience with Your Type of Painting Project
Ask about projects like yours. Repainting an occupied home, refinishing cabinets and coating exterior stucco involve different preparation and application work. Request relevant examples and ask what condition those surfaces were in before painting.
A company’s age and a painter’s experience are not the same thing. A newer business may be run by an experienced painter. Find out who will actually do the work and who will supervise it. You can learn about our team on the About Paysons Painting page and browse our painting project galleries.
Check Business Details, Insurance and WCB Coverage
Confirm the business name and contact information, and ask for current evidence of the licences and insurance applicable to the work. The City of Calgary’s contractor licensing information explains that requirements depend on business activities. A business licence is not a substitute for checking workmanship.
Ask about liability insurance and WCB coverage for the people working on your property. WCB-Alberta explains clearance letters and how to request one. Verify documents rather than relying on an unsupported “fully covered” claim.
Read Reviews and Ask for Relevant References
Ask friends and neighbours what went well, whether the agreed work was completed and how the painter handled questions or touch-ups. Look for similar details in recent reviews rather than judging by the star average alone.
A BBB profile can be another useful check, but it is not a guarantee. BBB explains its ratings, including that “No Rating” is not a negative grade and can reflect insufficient information or a file being updated. Consider the profile alongside references, project examples and your own conversations.
Get the Painting Scope in Writing
Before choosing a painter, make sure you understand:
- Which rooms or exterior surfaces are included, and what is excluded.
- The cleaning, repairs, sanding and priming being proposed.
- The paint products, finishes and coating system to be used.
- How furniture, floors, landscaping and adjacent surfaces will be protected.
- Who your contact will be, how scheduling works and how changes are approved.
- What cleanup and the final walkthrough include.
For an exterior project, ask how unsuitable weather affects the schedule. For interior painting, discuss access to rooms and what you need to move before the crew arrives.
Understand the Warranty and Follow-up Process
Ask for the warranty terms in writing: what work is covered, any exclusions, how to report a concern and who handles it. A broad guarantee in an advertisement is less useful than clear terms you can refer to after the job.
