Deck & Fence Painting and Staining in Calgary

Give your backyard a fresh look, from the deck under your feet to the fence around it.

Make more of your outdoor space

A freshly finished deck or fence can make the whole backyard feel more inviting. Whether you like the warmth of natural-looking wood or prefer a solid colour that ties in with your home, Paysons Painting can help you freshen things up.

We paint and stain wood decks and fences throughout Calgary and surrounding areas. We’ll look at the wood, the existing finish and the areas you want done, then recommend a practical approach. From the preparation to the final cleanup, we take care of the details so you can get back to enjoying your yard.

Decks, fences & the details around them

Deck staining & refinishing

Bring colour back to weathered decking or refresh an existing finish. We prepare the wood and use a coating suited to deck floors and foot traffic, with the amount of preparation based on what’s already on the surface.

Fence painting & staining

A consistent finish can tidy up the view across your whole yard. We paint and stain wood fence boards, posts and gates, whether you’re refreshing the existing colour or choosing something new. Your quote will make clear which sides are included.

Railings, steps & skirting

The smaller details help pull the job together. Wood railings, stair treads, risers and deck skirting can be included in your project, with finishes chosen to suit each surface rather than using the same product everywhere.

A closer look at our deck & fence work

Here are three of our deck, porch and fence projects in north Calgary. Each was pressure washed, scraped and power sanded, then primed with SharkSkin clear anti-peel primer and finished with Cloverdale SharkSkin solid stain.

Grey deck refinishing in Evanston

This deck had a worn finish across the boards and railings. After preparing the wood, we applied a fresh grey solid stain to give the whole deck a clean, consistent look.

Porch refinishing in Coventry

The worn steps and railings on this Coventry porch needed a refresh. Blue steps and a white railing give the entrance a crisp finish while keeping its familiar colour scheme.

Fence staining in Evanston

We refreshed this wood fence with a cream solid stain after removing the loose coating and preparing the surface. The finished fence gives the yard a much tidier backdrop.

How we prepare & finish your deck or fence

Look it over & quote

We check the wood and existing coating, talk through the look you want and provide a written quote. It outlines the surfaces, preparation and finish included, so you know what to expect.

Clean & prepare

We clean the wood, remove loose or failing coating and sand where needed. Some finishes need more extensive removal before recoating. Nearby siding, landscaping and other surfaces are protected.

Allow to dry & coat

We allow the wood to dry and plan the work around suitable weather. The preparation, primer if required, and application follow the chosen product’s requirements for that surface.

Finish & clean up

We check the finished work and tidy the area. Before you use the deck again, we explain the drying time and any care instructions that apply to the coating.

A finish that suits your home and your wood

A semi-transparent stain lets more of the wood’s grain and colour show through. A solid-colour stain gives a more uniform appearance. Your existing coating and the condition of the boards help determine which options are practical, especially if you want to move from a solid finish back to a natural-looking one.

We’ll also consider your siding, trim and the other colours in your yard. If the exterior needs attention too, we can quote your deck or fence alongside siding painting, exterior trim and door painting or a larger exterior painting project.

Deck & fence painting FAQs

The best choice depends on the wood, the existing finish and the look you want. Deck floors need a coating rated for horizontal surfaces and foot traffic. We’ll explain the suitable options instead of treating deck boards like a fence or exterior wall.

Sometimes, if the existing finish is sound and compatible with the new coating. Peeling or poorly bonded areas need preparation first, and changing to a more transparent finish can require more extensive removal. We’ll assess that before quoting.

Yes. We can quote the side you want done, the full fence or selected sections. We’ll confirm access and the surfaces included before work starts. If the fence is shared, arrange any necessary agreement with your neighbour first.

Yes, once the wood is ready for the chosen coating. New pressure-treated wood may need time to dry, and new boards can still need preparation. We assess readiness rather than relying on a fixed waiting period for every project.

We plan around dry weather, suitable temperatures and the drying requirements of the coating. The wood also needs to be dry enough before application. Rain, cold or very hot surfaces can change the schedule.

It varies with sun exposure, moisture, foot traffic, the wood and the coating. Deck floors usually need attention sooner than vertical fence boards. We’ll discuss maintenance and the signs that it’s time to recoat, rather than promise the same lifespan for every yard.

Size is only part of the quote. The condition of the existing coating, access, railings, steps and the number of fence sides all affect the work involved. We provide a written quote after looking at your project.
