How to Pick The Best Exterior House Paint To Weather The Elements

Best exterior house paint

The best exterior house paint is one that suits your home’s surfaces and their condition. Colour matters, but so do the existing coating, preparation, primer and the conditions when the paint is applied.

Before choosing a product for a Calgary home, work through these questions with your painter or paint supplier.

Match the Paint to the Surface

Start by identifying what will be painted: wood, stucco, fibre cement, metal or another material. Check that the product is approved for that surface and compatible with the existing finish. A product suitable for one part of the house may need a different primer or preparation on another.

Benjamin Moore’s exterior painting guide describes acrylic/latex coatings as suitable for many common exterior surfaces, while noting that primer selection depends on the substrate. There is no reason to choose oil-based paint solely because Calgary has cold winters.

Do Not Expect Paint to Repair Damage

Good coverage helps hide the previous colour; it does not fill dents, repair rotten wood or fix an underlying moisture problem. Loose paint and damaged areas need assessment and appropriate preparation before coating.

Likewise, “paint and primer” on a label does not mean every surface can skip a separate primer. Bare areas, stains or a difficult existing finish may need a compatible primer. Ask what preparation is included and why that coating system has been chosen.

Choose for Exposure and Application Conditions

Consider the conditions each part of the exterior faces, including sun, moisture and weathering. Compare the manufacturer’s intended uses and performance information rather than assuming that a higher price or a broad “all weather” description guarantees a better result.

Application limits are product-specific. There is no universal temperature range that makes every exterior paint safe to apply, and fall is not automatically better than summer. Our guide to outdoor painting temperature explains what to check in the forecast and on the surface.

Allow the Right Drying and Recoat Time

Faster drying is not always better. Paint needs appropriate working time for an even finish, and another coat should not be applied before the product allows it. Follow the specified coverage, coating thickness and recoat instructions rather than trying to stretch the paint or rush the schedule.

Ask how many coats are proposed and whether a major colour change or the surface texture affects that plan. You can see finished colour combinations in our exterior painting gallery.

Read Both Performance and Safety Information

VOC information is one part of selecting a coating, not a complete measure of suitability or safe use. Read the product label and safety data sheet for handling, ventilation, protective equipment and cleanup instructions. A low-VOC description does not replace those directions.

Choose a Complete Painting Plan

A useful proposal explains the preparation and coating system, not just the brand on the can. Ask how the painter will deal with the condition of your home and protect the areas that are not being painted.
